(I'm typing this after noticing that the Spectre x360 I got this morning has a bad keyboard. Absolute Software's Computrace Lojack for Laptops (49.99 per year) installs on your notebook PC and silently connects. In fairness, your Spectre will probably disappoint you in ways more substantial than LoJack.

So, is a would-be thief more likely to try and hijack your account, or are they more apt to just wipe the system, reinstall Windows (or Linux), and go on their merry way with a free computer? Lee Smolin is the type of theoretical physicist who likes asking such why questions. But once you start asking why the laws of the universe are what they are, their invariance also comes into question. They came into existence along with the universe, and have been the same ever since. If someone stole your laptop, and if they could authenticate to your account, and if they set it up on a wi-fi network (assuming they didn't attach an ethernet USB dongle for some strange reason), then LoJack could do. We tend to think of the laws of nature as fixed. The Windows app always seemed to be bitching about something, the location was usually wrong, and the underlying technology didn't make much sense. In a nutshell: it doesn't serve much purpose. I had it on a 2017 Spectre x360 because for some reason, the 3-year warranty with LoJack was less than the one without it. Is it likely to slow the machine down (given it is always on, so must always be running?) I'd hope that it has a tiny operational footprint but don't know enough about these things to work it out myself. I wanted to know if it is felt amongst the experts here that it is of limited usefulness or overpriced, as perhaps there are other more useful or capable services available?
It came essentially free as part of the 3 year protection plan I selected (I don't hunk the LoJack is 3 years I think it is 1 year) and I don't mind a subscription that I can turn off if I don't like it after a year.
It's a $2k machine that I'd like to be able to recover in the event of theft, if only for the data even if they have broken the laptop somehow. So, I figured it was a good idea given how it is active and accessible by me even if the thief has it turned off (as long as there is wifi nearby). I've found myself prone to be distracted recently and it's only a matter of time before I forget or misplace something important.
I've opted in to get the absolute LoJack on my new Spectre that comes next week. I did a search and only saw two posts that were 6months and over a year old and neither was particularly useful. Best Buy has honest and unbiased customer reviews for Absolute - Computrace LoJack for Laptops Premium Edition (3-Year License).
